Arizona is a wonderfully diverse state. There are wine vineyards as far north as the Verde Valley and Payson and south to the Mexico border. There is a band of Thermic soil that runs east to west and covers all of Cochise, Santa Cruz and limited parts of of Pima, Graham, Pinal, Gila, Maricopa, Mohave and Yavapai counties. The majority of this area is in Cochise and Pima counties. Site selection is critical for the success of your new vineyard. Some of the most important factors are;
• Climate: High and Low Temperatures, Frost-Free Periods, Altitude, Topography, Wind
• Soils: Series and Types, Soil Depth, Drainage, Texas Root Rot, Fertility, Temperature
• Water: Quantity, Quality, Wells, Irrigation Timing
• Pest: Rabbits, Deer, Gophers, Birds, and Insects
• Field Size
• Distance to Wineries
• Agricultural Zoning & Regulations
• Sources of Power and Labor
• Cost of Land
As vineyard site is the arguably the most factor in growing exceptional grapes. Soil, climate and crop studies should be undertaken prior to deciding upon a site. It is highly advisable to contract an expert to assist in the process.
