Starting a Vineyard/Winery

STEP 9:
Licenses: State & Federal

The production, sale and shipment of alcoholic beverages is regulated by states and the federal government. Thus, all manufactures of wine must become license with both the state and the federal government's, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Fire Arms (ATF). It is recommended that one apply at least 6 months prior to the anticipated sale of wine for all appropriate licenses.

State of Arizona Permits:

In Arizona, the process is relatively painless and inexpensive. The State requires a "Series 13 Domestic Farm Winery License" for wine manufacture's in Arizona producing more than 200 gallons and less than 75,000 gallons of wine each year. This license allows a producer to sell and sample wine both on and off premises. The total cost for this license is about $200 with and annual renewal fee of $170.00. Federal Alcohol Administration Permits:

Every person who produces, processes or warehouses distilled spirits or wine shall obtain a basic permit. Anyone engaged in the business of purchasing for resale at wholesale or importing distilled spirits, wine, or malt beverages must also first obtain a basic permit. All such persons before commencing business must file an application and necessary documents with ATF. The major focus of this application is label approval. The ATF requires that all wines have an approved ATF label prior to sale. The applicant must have a permit approved by ATF in hand before engaging in business.
